The Construction Association of P.E.I. Women in Construction Committee has facilitated the build of a luxurious She Shed being raffled off in support of mammography equipment for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Tickets for this shed, affectionately named Willow Shed, are available on the QEH Foundation’s website and at Sherwood TIMBER MART, where the shed can be viewed until the draw date on Jan. 6. Tickets are $25 each or five for $100.

“When you go through something as life-altering as breast cancer, you learn the importance of community. I’m proud to say the construction community has really come together to lend support to this project.”

Jennie Arsenault of Arsenault Bros Construction, a member of the Women in Construction Committee, says she is honoured to support the purchase of equipment she has directly benefited from. As a breast cancer thriver, she says her experience with cancer at age 30 motivated her to make changes in her own life and has allowed her to help others.

“Sometimes what you go through in life will be someone else’s survival guide. And that was the case for a very close friend the year following my diagnosis,” said Arsenault. “I was in a unique position to be able to help her navigate the journey I had just gone through. If something good can come from my experience with cancer, then my suffering was not wasted.”

Arsenault is proud of the collaborative work that has happened to create this luxury prize.

“When you go through something as life-altering as breast cancer, you learn the importance of community,” said Arsenault. “I’m proud to say the construction community has really come together to lend support to this project.”

The project has many collaborators including major sponsor Sherwood TIMBER MART, as well as the Construction Association of P.E.I., Arsenault Bros Construction and Plank & Pine Interior Design. The base building materials and labour for this shed were provided by the Construction Association of P.E.I.’s training program. The 8x12-foot shed is insulated, wired, solar-equipped, beautifully furnished and decorated with stunning natural decor. It is complete with an 8x10-foot patio and includes an outdoor patio flame and Adirondack chairs. The shed can be delivered within a 50-km radius.

Sam Sanderson, general manager of the Construction Association of P.E.I., says it was a natural fit to partner with the QEH Foundation.

It is also a partnership it is proud of as it gave students an opportunity to learn while contributing to a cause.

“Our Women in Construction Committee stepped up in a big way to support the Island’s largest hospital, where so many women are screened for breast cancer each year.”

MaryEllen Hughes, QEH Foundation Director of Philanthropy, says the foundation is delighted to have such a unique item available for raffle with funds benefiting a top medical equipment priority for the QEH this year.

“The QEH Diagnostic Imaging department requires two new digital mammography machines at a cost of $1.12 million,” says Hughes. “We are so grateful for the outstanding contributions of all involved in the construction of the Willow Shed and to those who will buy tickets on a chance to win this beautiful prize.”
